Glossary
Accident and Emergency Department (A&E) – Open access hospital department that receives patients with sudden onset of severe illness or accidental injury.
Artemis – Greek God – protector of children and also the brand name of this project.
Asthma – A condition that affects the airways of the lungs. Patients find it difficult to breath and may wheeze
Children’s Centre – Local community based service, staffed with multi-disciplinary teams working with 0 – 19 year age range of children and young people, and their families.
Children’s Workforce – Anyone in a role that comes into contact with children, young people, their carers and families.
Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) - An employer led organisation, which represents the main children's workforce employers across the public, private, voluntary and independent sectors.
Children’s Workforce Induction Programme (CWIP) – A web-based elearning in induction course based on the CWDC Induction Standards.
Circle Time - A class room activity where children sit in a circle and are encouraged to communicate with each other
Common Assessment Framework (CAF) – Holistic assessment to identify needs of children and young people and actions to meet those needs.
Common Core – key skills and knowledge needed by all people, whose role brings them into regular contact with children, young people and their families.
ContactPoint – Basic online directory where practitioners can find out contact details of other services that are or have been involved with a child or young person.
CYP - Children and Young People
Educational Welfare Officer (EWO) – A designated person who liaises between education and social care departments. They monitor pupil attendance and may intervene to support families where appropriate.
Every Child Matters (ECM) - Government programme for a national framework to support the "joining up" of children’s services - education, culture, health, social care, and justice.
Fractures - A bone is cracked or broken.
Frozen Awareness – or Frozen watchfulness – The child seems distant and emotionally detached, and may flinch if someone approaches. Also may be passive, have low self esteem, and appear unhappy or unable to participate in activities.
General Practitioner (GP) – family doctor, based in the community surgery or health centre.
Holistic - whole or all round. Eg. "holistic" child development: See the child as a whole individual, rather than specific aspects of isolated development, eg physical development
Induction Standards – A set of criteria that list the knowledge, skills and understanding required to help someone in their role to work effectively.
Legislation – Law
Lesion - an injury or wound.
Mid Day Assistant (MDA) – A person employed at the school to supervise children during lunchtime periods both in the dining hall and in the playground/yard
Multi-Disciplinary/Multi-Agency – people working together from different organisations, for the benefit of children, young people and their families.
Passport Control Officer – A person who checks an individual’s entry into a country based on holding a valid passport. Immigration Officers will check the right of entry to a country.
Police Constable – A rank of police officer whose responsibility it is to uphold the law and serve the community.
Scabies - Intense itching, caused by a parasitic mite, burrowing into the skin. Common in young children and adults. Highly contagious.
School crossing patrol guard (lollypop person) – A person who ensures the safe crossing of main roads, near a school at the beginning and end of the school day.
School nurse – A qualified nurse who specialises in working with school aged children and their families and may be based in the school..
Section 47 enquiries – A core assessment, as set out in the “Framework for the assessment of children in need and their families” DoH 2000, as laid out in The Children Act 1989. Information is gathered from the child, parent/carers, family members and other professionals. If the child is considered to be “at risk of continuing harm” a case conference meeting will be held – within 15 working days.
Social deprivation – an indicator of economic standing or status
Special Educational Needs (SEN) – A child with additional or individual needs.
Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) – Designated person working in the school who has responsibility to coordinates assessment, monitoring and support for children with individual and special needs.
Teaching and Classroom Assistants – Additional adults in the school classroom who work with the children to support teaching and learning.
Transient Pupils – Pupils moving from school to school. This may be due to frequent relocations or mobile lifestyles or as a strategy to avoid detection from the authorities.
Ventilator – A machine that pushes air into the lungs. It's only used for people who are very poorly.
Vulnerable Children - includes children and young people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures who may be in need or at risk.
